When learning about Piedmont Dental, you will notice positive and refreshing things about our very different office right away. Upon entering, the friendly staff greet you with a warm smile. The inviting waiting room, with subtle lighting, begins your relaxed experience.
At your first appointment you will notice the dental professionals all work in an open atmosphere. Piedmont Dental has an open ceiling-type interior design with medium height divider walls that provide you with comforting privacy, yet allow for a spacious exam space.
Our efforts to provide you with a very relaxed environment continue with our highly professional staff. In short, we are nice people that care about your dental experience. We know you will feel comfortable.
Dr. David Haugen
Dr. Haugen is a native Duluthian. He graduated from Denfeld High School and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of Minnesota, Duluth. He continued his education at Marquette University School of Dentistry, where he received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. Dr. Haugen completed a one-year advanced education in General Dentistry program with the United States Navy. Prior to returning to Duluth to start his private practice at Piedmont Dental in 2003, Dr. Haugen was a commissioned officer in the United States Navy as a dentist.
Dr. Haugen has served two overseas operational tours in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom aboard the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln in 2002-2003, and with Expeditionary Medical Facility Dallas, a field hospital unit at Camp Beuhring Kuwait in 2005. He served an additional 14 years in the Navy Reserve in various leadership capacities, and currently is a staff dentist with the Minnesota Air National Guard 148th Fighter Wing Medical Group in Duluth, MN, in addition to serving patients at Piedmont Dental.
Dr. Haugen’s passions outside of dentistry include spending time with his wife and four children, coaching various youth sports, golfing, fishing, curling, and recreational hockey. He is also active in his community as a member at the VFW, and is on the finance board of his church.
Dr. Haugen is a member of the American Dental Association, Minnesota Dental Association, Northeastern District Dental Society, the Academy of General Dentistry, and the Chicago Dental Society. He enjoys all facets of dentistry and looks forward to assisting you meet your oral health care needs in a kind, caring, and professional manner.
Dr. Brian Mart
Dr. Brian Mart grew up in Hermantown, MN and is a graduate of Hermantown High School. He completed his undergraduate education at Oral Roberts University, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology. Dr. Mart decided to become a dentist during his youth, and fulfilled his dream when he graduated from Northwestern University Dental School in Chicago, Illinois, earning his Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree.
After graduation from dental school, Dr. Mart returned to Duluth and joined the dental team at Piedmont Dental, where he had been a patient since childhood. After working with the dentists at Piedmont Dental for a couple years, Dr. Mart purchased the dental practice of Dr. Stuart Jensen, and has enjoyed serving his patients at Piedmont Dental for more than 30 years.
Dr. Mart serves the public not only in his dental practice, but also as a Dental Board Examiner, appointed by the State of Minnesota Board of Dentistry. He has found this to be a professionally rewarding experience.
Dr. Mart is a member of the American Dental Association, the Minnesota Dental Association, the Northeastern District Dental Society, the Central Regional Testing Agency, the American Association of Dental Examiners, and a past member of the Lake Superior College School of Hygiene Advisory Board.
Dr. Mart enjoys spending his time outside of work traveling with his family. Gardening and cooking have become his passions at home. An awesome Great Dane dog at home round out his favorite things.
Dr. Heidi Spoelhof
Dr. Spoelhof first joined the Piedmont Dental family as a patient while growing up in Duluth, Minnesota. She graduated from the Marshall School, completed a BA in Chemistry (and minor in Spanish) from Carleton College, and earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry.
After graduation from dental school, Dr. Spoelhof completed a General Practice Residency at Hennepin County Medical Center. She joined Piedmont Dental as an associate dentist in June, 2008, and eventually replaced her childhood dentist, Dr. Joe Schneeweis, as a full partner upon his retirement in 2010. Dr. Spoelhof is a member of the American Dental Association, Minnesota Dental Association, and the Northeastern District Dental Society. She also volunteers with the Lake Superior College Dental Hygiene program.
Outside of the office, Dr. Spoelhof enjoys spending time with her husband, Dan, and their three children, cross country skiing, watching UMD hockey, and attending their children’s sporting events. They are glad to call the Piedmont area their home.
Dr. Spoelhof enjoys all areas of dentistry and is accepting new patients. She looks forward to meeting you!
Dr. Jon Nash
Dr. Jon Nash earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. He continued his education earning his Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. He is a member of the American Dental Association and the Minnesota Dental Association. He is trained in placing dental implants and utilizes our 3D scanner to provide patients with a safe and predictable result.
While living in Duluth earning his undergraduate degree, Dr. Nash developed a love for the Northland and knew this was the area where he wanted to establish his future dental practice. Dr. Nash joined Piedmont Dental in June 2011.
In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his wife and 3 kids, traveling, golfing, downhill skiing, hunting, and watching sports.

Dr. Megan Ecker
Dr. Megan Ecker, a native Minnesotan, grew up in Lino Lakes. Following high school, she attended St. Olaf College, earning a degree in Biology. She completed her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry in 2019. Dr. Ecker is proud to bring her knowledge of new technology, dental materials, and treatment techniques to her patients. Dr. Ecker is a member of the American Dental Association, Minnesota Dental Association, Northeastern District Dental Society, and the Academy of General Dentistry.
Outside of the office, Dr. Ecker takes advantage of the great outdoor spaces that Duluth has to offer, and is often accompanied by her husband, Max, and their border collie, Layla. She enjoys running, biking, skiing, spending time with family at the cabin, and trips to the Boundary Waters, where she has worked as a canoe guide.
Dr. Ecker decided to become a dentist after sustaining an injury to a front tooth and experienced firsthand the difference that quality dentistry made in her smile. She enjoys all aspects of general dentistry, specifically how the profession allows her to solve problems, blend art and science, and get to know her patients and their families. As the newest partner at Piedmont Dental, she is proud to carry on the tradition of excellent dental care set by her former partner, Dr. Clyde Finch,
